Its worth a visit
A return to my old site
26/04/2025 23:31Its nice to return to my ol haunts after so long and this morning offered me a rare chance to walk the River Calder between Ossett and Dewsbury for the firfst time since the Covid virus interupted what used to be a very regular routine.
It was nice to see good numbers of Sand Martins back at their old sites and I was pleasantly surprised to count some 36 pairs making rady for the coming breeding season excavating holes and also using whhat must have been previously used burrows'
What a surprise to come across Cettis Warbler singing its head off in the Willow plantation oppositte the water treatment works. This species Iv become much used to in my excursions in North Lincolnshire where the species is in great abundence.
Goosanders seem to be doing rather well with one bird showing off 6 fairly new chicks and at least 2 more pairs holding territory in suitable habitat.
A Kingfisher was busy carrying food back and forth going away from its regular nesting site. Its a shame that fishermen now seem intent on standing oin the river to fish close to suitable breeding sites.Willlow warblers where singing at 5 sites and seem at the moment to be prersent in better numbers that recent seasons
It was an encourging couple of hours this morning and I hope I can once again make the area a regular excursion on my off days.
