I have been visiting Alkbofro Flats now for some 3 years on a weekly basis along with several sights in that part of the country.

The site displays a vast amount of Phragmitese reedbed with three wooden hides situated at different viewing points of the Reserve. The first one situated just below the village is the most popular giving excellent views of visiting waders and wildfowl. The secondI foind hide is an elevated viewing point over most of the reservevery good for raptors on the right day but a lot of what is seen in front of the hide is badly in good need of good management and muc work needs to be done. The third hide lies on the Northern edge of the reserve and gives views from the river Trent towards the tall Hide.Blacktoft Sands can be seen just across the river behind the hide.nd

Most of my birding tends to be done arondund the second hide. This area is generaly much quieter than the habitat arojnd the first hide thouugh it does throw up the occassinal surprise like the Hoopoe I found close to the second hide (a new species for this site)

On my arrival this morning a Common Buzzard was being mobbed by 8 Swallows as it drifted slowly towards the River Trent.2 Song Thrushes where pursuing each other on the track leading down to the public walks.

The area below the second hide becomes more interesting with several small muddy ponds and occassional views in to the main marsh with open water.

A male Marsh Harrier was circling high above the main marsh area before the second hide and a Green Woodpecker was continualy calling as it flew to alight on the dead trees on the front end of the Marsh.

A single Greenshank flew from the first muddy flash  accompanied by male and female Wigeon both species circling around several times before heading off towards the river.

A brief walk on the main riverbank path produced 2 singing Reed Warblers,8 Barnacle Geese,14 Grey Lag Geese and surprisingly 2 Whimbrel which arrived and alighted on one of the floating river lights for several minutes before continuing Westwards
