Some recent birding news from our area.

The female Smew was present on the Calder yesterday for most of the day.A count of Wigeon on the opposite bank of the river near the Hotworks Mill area produced some 72 birds.5 Goldeneye were on the river as well as 1 drake Mandarin Duck,5 Goosander,3 Pochard and 8 Cormorants.
There is a Barn Owl still present on the Thornhill Wetlands area and the bird has been reported huting at dusk on Thornhill Millbank.
There are 3 species of Owl being recorded regularly in this area and it is hoped that with new owl nesting boxes being erected for all the 3 species we will have some success in helping them to breed.
Most of the Meadow Pipits on Dewsbury Sewage Farm seem to have dispersed for the time being but the works still holds arouind 78 Pied Wagtails,5 Grey Wagtails and around 76 Teal.
2 Coot are on the river near the works but the large numbers of Thrushes appear to have moved on from this area.
